In the 1800's and 1900's, immigration into the U.S. was growing at an enormous rate. People would come to this country with no money and no knowledge of the language, and most would manage to survive. Most worked hard to make a living; many learned to speak the English language, if only at a rudimentery level.
Today, things have not changed...too much. Immigration is still growing at an enormous rate. People still come into this country with no money and little knowledge of the English language.
Well, okay. That's where the commonalities end. Today, the immigrants don't work very hard to learn the language. At least, it doesn't seem that they do...the government, businesses, and schools work very hard at making sure the immigrants don't HAVE to. Policies and procedures are put into place so that Americans...I should say, those people we consider Americans (not Native Americans)...are forced to learn the languages of other countries, simply so they can come into the country and continue to speak their own language and therefore do not have to integrate themselves into the "culture" of the United States.
This is not to say, however, that these immigrants are not hard working. Most of them are very hard working. Many of them come to this country in hopes to make money and send it home to their families; or, they bring their families with them and work hard to feed them and give them shelter. In fact, there are rumors that many of these immigrants come into the country and agree to work for a much lower pay than would most "Americans", and are therefore accused of stealing jobs away from hard working Americans who would like to work, but cannot find a job. (Nevermind the fact that, as was stated, many of the immigrants send money home, and the American dollar can go much farther for them in their home country than it can for us here in our country).
This is, though, where the pleasntries cease to exist. Many immigrants come into the country by certain means...means that allow them to live here without the government knowing about them. They do this for numerous reasons. First, and most obvious, they do not have social-security numbers and therefore do not have to pay any taxes on the money they earn. In fact, without any social security number, these people remain, as far as the government is concerned, as ghosts in this country, invisible but real. Living as ghosts, these people are free to do anything they wish; if they desire to work hard, they may, and if they choose to gain money in other ways, they may. Without a social security number, immigrants have no need to tell anyone where the reside, and therefore have no need to fear the police or other government officials, should they choose to engage in activities that are less-than-honorable.
There are disadvantages to not having social security numbers, though. These numbers allow people to gain things from the government - such as health care, driver's licenses, and other such items. Many people have heard rumors that the government wishes to provide free health care for illegal immigrants, as well as other things that such "illegal ghosts" would not be able to get and use. The government does not outright tell us, though, that WE will be fronting the bill for all of these fringe benefits given to illegal immigrants. (remember, without social security numbers, they pay no taxes and therefore provide no money to help the government implement any programs.)
In recent occurances, however, these illegal immigrants have overstepped the line that was metaphorically drawn, and the government seems to refuse to do much about it. It has been discovered that at least 2000 children in Utah have had their identities stolen. Somehow, people have been able to get a hold of the social security numbers (and, perhaps, other identifying items) of these children, and use them to get things - things such as medical care, money, and credit. In fact, a number of these children, it has been discovered, have had their credit ruined - before they ever left the first grade.
It has been discovered that many of the suspects in these thefts are - guess who - illegal immigrants. Does the government have any plan to limit or stop illegal immigration? Of course not! In fact, the government, in the past week, shot down plans to hire more Border Patrol Officers, feeling that this would be too stringent of a step against illegal immigration.
